It’s My Party

For years and years in the New York radio market, WFAN led the way in sports radio… some talk stations have had a little sports here and there, but no one has ever come into the fray to fight a battle… But a war is definitely on, and I think that someone is winning, and it’s not the ‘Fan… ESPN Radio has come in in the last few years and has launched a local lineup of hosts including Wallace Matthews and Tom Keegan, popular sports writers in the area, as well as Michael Kay, who announces Yankee games on the YES television network. So while 1050 plays the nationally broadcast Mike & Mike in the morning, SportsCenter’s Dan Patrick in the mid-afternoon shift, and Jim Rome on tape delay after 7pm, they’ve taken on the “drive time” in the afternoon with some local flair – where their promos say “we talk sports WITH YOU, not AT YOU”… And I think more and more, they’re starting to be right about that, as people are moving away it seems from the callers identifying themselves as “converts” from down the dial…. Especially in the afternoon drive-time segments.
